The Basics

More Than a Filling, Less Than a Crown

Inlays and onlays restore teeth that have moderate damage, typically when more than half the biting surface is affected. An inlay fits within the cusps (the raised points) of your tooth, much like a filling. An onlay covers one or more cusps as well, restoring a larger area. Both are custom-made from porcelain, gold, or composite resin, then bonded securely in place.

While gold was traditionally used, most patients today choose porcelain, it's strong, durable, and matched to the natural color of your teeth.
